Ceylon got its name from the Portuguese who stumbled upon the island in 1505 CE. The control later passed over to the British that ruled the country till its independence in 1948. The nation remained dominion of the British Commonwealth till 1972 when the Queen ceased to be the titular head and the new republic was rechristened Sri Lanka.
