Ana Ipătescu (1805-75)

Ana Ipătescu (1805-75) was a Romanian revolutionary who fought in the 1848 Wallachian Revolution.

Ana was born in Bucharest, to a merchant family. She became a part of the Brotherhood Secret Society and started participating in revolutionary activities along with her second husband Nicholae Ipătescu. When the revolution broke out on 9th June 1848, Ana participated in it and let the crowds against the government.

As published in Allgemeine Osterreichische Zeitung, on 20th June 1848, “The desperation was by now at a high peak, when a heroine, coming from the Mogosoaia bridge with two weapons in her hands. She yelled with everything she had: “Death to the traitors! Young men, courage, save the freedom!

Ana died in 1875. She had wished to be buried at the Pasărea Monastery, however, he grave was lost to the turmoil of the times.

In 1975, the government of Romania issued a commemorative stamp to mark the 100th death anniversary of Ana Ipătescu.
