Portuguese India – Vasco De Gama Postcards
1898
The Government of Portuguese India issued two sets of Postcards in 1898 to commemorate the fourth centenary of Vasco de Gama’s discovery of the maritime route to India. Postcards with twelve different graphical designs were printed in Portugal, inscribed India, and carried a portrait of King Carlos I of Portugal. The first eight postcards had the text BILHETE POSTAL, the portrait on the same side as the illustration, with the other side being blank, and the last four postcards had the text UNIVERSAL POSTALE UNIVERSALLE – INDIA – CARTE POSTALE and the portrait of the King and space to write the address on the other side of the cards.
