Portuguese India – Our Lady of Fatima
1948-49
A Portuguese Indian Government order numbered 12597 and dated 21st October 1948 issued a new stamp depicting Nossa Senhora de Fatima with three children. This was the first stamp to be issued independently, without being part of a series. The stamp was common to Portugal and the Colonies. It was designed by Almada Nregreiros and printed on chalked surface paper at Litografia Nacional S.A., Porto. This was also the first time when ESTADO DA INDIA was replaced by INDIA PORTUGUESA on the stamps.
In 1949, a set of 8 stamps of Our Lady of Fatima were issued as per directive number 12795, dated 27th April 1949. The stamps were printed at Litografia Nacional S.A., Porto, using the offset lithography technique.
