Portuguese India – New Currency Overprints (1959)
1959
Portuguese India changed its currency to conform to the decimal system in January 1959. The new currency was Escudos, where 100 centavos = 1 Escudos, instead of the older denomination of 12 reis = 1 Tanga. Older postage stamps and postage due stamps were overprinted with the new currency (legislative order no. 1863) and were put into circulation from 1st January, 1959.
