India Portuguesa
Portuguese India – King Carlos I – REPUBLICA
1911
On 1st February 1908, King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated along with his son, the Crown Prince Luís Filipe, in Lisbon. This incident, known as the Lisbon Regicide, effectively ended the 800-year-old monarchy of Portugal. Though the newly appointed King, 18-year-old Manual, continued to rule for 2 more years, he was overthrown in 1910, exiled, and Portugal became a republic.
In 1911, the Portuguese government in India reissued the 1898 and 1903 stamps of King Carlos I with the overprint REPUBLICA. A total of sixteen stamps were issued in 1911, all except one surcharged in Red, the other being green. The stamps were designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, printed at Casa da Moeda de Portugal, Lisbon and came in the perforations 11½. The overprint was diagonal, starting at the bottom left and ending at the top right.
