Portuguese India – King Carlos I of Portugal
1898-1900
In 1898, the Portuguese government of Goa issued postage stamps with the portraits of Dom Carlos I. The stamps were designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon and printed at Casa da Moeda de Portugal. The design featured a portrait of King Carlos I within a circular band, enclosed in a rectangular frame adorned with elephant and flower patterns. The words CORREIOS, INDIA, and PORTUGAL were inscribed within the band from left to right. The value was printed in black over the stamps as a second strike. These stamps were typographed and carried a perforation of 11½.
