Dom Carlos I ascended the throne of Portugal on 19th October 1889, succeeding his father, King Luís I. A well-educated and travelled person, Carlos signed treaties with the United Kingdom, conceding territories in Africa to the British Empire in the quest for peace. On the home front, he struggled with a shaky economy and volatile political scenario. There were internal disturbances and unrest despite his efforts to bring stability.
On 1st February 1908, King Carlos I and his heir, Luís Filipe, were assassinated by two republican activists in Lisbon. He was succeeded by his son Manuel II.
