Queen Victoria New Colours

1900-1902

In 1900, the Universal Postal Union (U.P.U.) requested that the colours of the stamps should have uniformity in terms of the values that they carried. To adhere to this, the colours of ½ anna, 1 anna (pale violet and mauve), and 2 anna 6 pies (ultramarine) stamps had their colours changed. Additionally, new stamps were issued with changed colours for these values. The 3 pies stamps were issued in grey while the ½ anna ones were in yellow-green and pale yellow-green.

These stamps were the last to be issued in the name of Queen Victoria. With her death in 1901, the great Victorian era of 63 years came to an end. Her eldest son, Albert Edward ascended the throne as King Edward VII.

The stamps of Queen Victoria were finally withdrawn on 31st August 1938.
