King George V Surcharged

1921-1922

In 1921, the postal rates were revised from half anna to nice pies, considering the changes in the cost of delivery. One anna stamps were overprinted ‘NINE PIES’ in two rows and with a black bar over the value to meet the demand for lower denomination stamps. The revision also increased the demand for 3 pies stamps. The half-anna stamps were overprinted with 1/4 and were used to meet this demand. The overprinting was done in Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Karachi and variations exist in the overprints. Errors are also not uncommon.
