1st Asian Games & GSI Centenary

1951

The first Asian Games, officially known as the First Asiad, was held from March 4 to March 11, 1951, in New Delhi, India. This marked the inauguration of a major multi-sport event dedicated to athletes across Asia.

The Asian Games were conceived to promote goodwill among the nations of Asia following the end of World War II. The event was organized by the Asian Games Federation (AGF), the governing body before the current Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) took over. A total of 489 athletes from 11 countries participated in the Games. The Games featured six sports: athletics, aquatics (swimming and diving), basketball, cycling, football (soccer), and weightlifting, and 57 events across the sports.

India topped the medal tally with the highest number of gold medals.

Centenary of Geological Survey of India

In 1951, India celebrated 100 years of the Geological Survey of India, a scientific agency dedicated to geological surveys and the study of basic earth science in India. Founded in 1851 by the East India Company, the organisation was initially formed to study and explore the availability of coal in the eastern parts of India. In the 19th century, the GSI undertook extensive surveys and expeditions across the British Indian empire that helped understand the geological structure of the subcontinent in a better way.

The commemorative stamp featured a pair of Stegodon Ganesa, an extinct genus of prehistoric elephants with a sideways trunk and huge tusks.
