The Abbasid dynasty of Bahawalpur, also known as the Nawabs of Bahawalpur, traces its origins to the Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad, claiming direct descent. The dynasty was founded in 1790 by Bahawal Khan I, who established control over the region. Over time, the Nawabs expanded their territory and solidified their rule. Bahawalpur became an important princely state, known for its economic prosperity and cultural achievements. The rulers implemented various development projects, including the construction of palaces, mosques, and other infrastructure. The state maintained its autonomy under British suzerainty during the colonial period and eventually acceded to Pakistan in 1947. The dynasty’s rule officially ended in 1955 when Bahawalpur was integrated into Pakistan as a province.
