The Munich Summer Olympics of 1972 was held from 26th August to 11th September of the year, in Munich, a city in what was then known as West Germany.
The event was marred by the Munich massacre when 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were killed by members of Black September, a Palestinian militant organization. All but three of the attackers were killed as well. The survivors were put on trial in West Germany but were subsequently released in exchange for the hijacked Lufthansa flight 615. Two of them were later hunted down one by one by the Israeli spy agency, Mossad.
In 2005, Stephen Spielberg made a film named Munich that was based on this incident. The film was critically acclaimed.
