Ribeira Grande: The Royal Dockyard of Goa

In June 1877, the eighth issue was established. By a directive dated 16th May 1977, the Governor General, Tavares de Almeida, ordered the existing dies to be updated and a star to be added above the denominations. Additionally, a small horizontal white bar was added below the word REIS. The stamps with the new design went into circulation from 1st June 1877. 

Two more dies were made for the issue, one of Type I, where the lines did not touch the oval, and Type II where the lines touched the oval. 

The different issues were as follows: 

    1. Type – I – REIS in Roman characters
      1. 10 reis black 
    2. Type – II – REIS in Norman characters
      1. 10 reis black 
    3. Type – I – REIS in Norman characters
      1. 10 reis black 
      2. 15 reis pink
      3. 20 reis carmine 
      4. 40 reis blue 
      5. 100 reis green 
      6. 200 reis yellow
      7. 300 reis purple
      8. 600 reis purple
      9. 900 reis purple 

The stamps with the small star were in use for a very short time, as the Crown Design stamps arrived by July 15th 1877.

Third Issue. Mundifil Type 3.0, Numerals, With Seven Petal Floral Ornament

Definitive, Unwatermarked, Lithographed, Thin Bluish Paper, Perforation 12½ and 14½ Compound.

‘V’ has a horizontal mid bar. Seven Petals floral ornament. White Oval. ‘S’ is small. Horizontal bar cuts background lines. 5 dots design. Roman with serif.
